Many people don't realize that their computer is idile over 90% of the time it is on, even when it is in use. The only time a computer's processor is using every cycle for something productive is the few seconds it takes to load a program, or when converting large files such as movies or music, which is not done often. You've paid for a processor capable of millions (billions if your computer is newer) of cycles per second, why not use it? If you join the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS), all of your unused processor time will be spent searching for new Mersenne primes, which are very rare numbers. If you do end of finding one, you could win up to $50,000 and world fame among the mathematics community. After you install this program (called prime95), it will automaticall run and start when you turn on your computer. You can even hide the icon so you don't even notice it's open. The best part about it is that, by default, has a priority of 1. What this means is if your computer is trying to do anything, prime95 will stop working and wait until the other process has completed. This prevents prime95 from slowing your computer down at all.
Interested in joining the search? You can download a copy of the program here. If you have any questions you can view the GIMPS website at http://www.mersenne.org and browse. After downloading the file, open it to install. Set whatever directory you like, although the default is best. When it asks for your username and password, type ab3 for the username and othsswim for the password. Set your computer name to whatever you would like to be known as. By using this username and password, you will join my team. The only option I recommend you changing is under preferences, set "Days between sending new end dates" to 1. This will ensure that the server knows how you are doing and does not reassign you number to someone else. I will take care of monitoring your account and will inform you if you have found anything. Hopefully we can get enough people on our team to move up the ranks to the top 100, and maybe even farther. Try to get your friends to join too. If you have multiple computers, you can connect all of them to my team, just give them different computer names.
Thanks in advance for joining ab3, if you have any questions you can e-mail me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
